Getting a good longboard brand begins with you, or specifically what you currently want or need. We understand that some people may say, “I don’t even know what I want right now!”.

That’s okay! That’s completely normal. For now, let’s start off with a few very easy questions so you can paint a much clearer picture in your head.

Is this longboard for kids?

Although longboards for kids are called “long”, they may be quite short for adults. Playshion makes great longboards for kids. Their longboards are around 39”. If you’re looking for a longboard for adult (over 39”), Retrospec or Sector 9 will definitely not disappoint.

Carving, cruising, freestyle or downhill racing?

Longboards are specifically designed for long distances and high speeds situations like racing and carving. They have quite different shapes and feel.

You’ll find drop-through or cut-out decks on most carving longboards. They feel very flexy as well. For such purposes, Atom and Landyachtz longboards are definitely the bombs.

If you’re a beginner, choose a cruiser longboard. It is surf-inspired and super easy to ride. Basically, it does look a lot like a surfboard.

Freestyle longboards are great for tricks and feel super surfy. They have deep cut-outs and slightly elevated tails.

If you’re looking for a downhill longboard, you’ll usually get a bullet shape one with a stiff, thick deck and wide trucks.

We know this may be a lot to take in all at once. But keep in mind these basic shapes and ask yourself what you’ll do most with your board. That’ll lead you closer to choosing the best brand.
